The words are not all the same. Their effectiveness depends on where and how we read them. In the last twenty-five years, we have passed from words printed on paper to those formed by tiny pixels that appear on the screens of our smartphones and PCs. The way of reading has changed and the writing process has also changed. And don’t think you can get away with the techniques you learn in school. The Internet is a world full of stimuli and distractions. A fundamental requirement for written content is, therefore, to immediately capture the attention of the navigator, to prevent it from falling into the temptation to look for information elsewhere, for example, websites where students leave messages like that try to pay someone to do my homework. The trick to use is that of the “inverted pyramid”. The first few lines are the ones that matter most: if your content answers a question or spreads a type of information, you must give it immediately, without unnecessary introductions and focusing the topic well. Then you can aim to deepen, proposing interesting and stimulating reflections on the topic. The other element to take care of is the writing style. Reading on a smartphone is not like reading a book or a newspaper: everything travels faster and the reader’s approach is less formal. This translates into the need to adopt a clear and fast style, with short sentences and simple terminology. The tone changes a lot depending on where the text is published, but in general, it is better to adopt a colloquial style.
