Cloud PBX is Microsoft’s technology for enabling call control and PBX capabilities in the Office 365 cloud with Skype for Business Online. Skype for Business Cloud PBX allows you to replace your existing PBX system with a set of features directly delivered from Office 365 and tightly integrated into the company’s cloud productivity experience.

With Cloud PBX, your users can use Skype for Business Online to take care of basic call control tasks, such as placing and receiving calls, transferring calls, muting and unmuting calls. Cloud PBX users can click on a name in their address book, and the Skype for Business in turn places a call to that person. To place and receive calls, Cloud PBX users can make use of their mobile devices, a headset, a laptop or PC, or one of many IP phones that work with Skype for Business.

For administrators, Cloud PBX provides the ability to manage calls within the same Tenant admin console used for messaging, collaboration, and so on.

A Skype for Business hybrid deployment is a deployment where users of a domain, are split between using Skype for Business Server on-premises and Skype for Business Online. Some of the domain users are homed and placed on the on-premises Skype for Business Server pools, and some users are homed and placed on Skype for Business Online.

You can configure your on-premises deployment for hybrid with Skype for Business Online and use Active Directory Synchronization to keep your on-premises and online users synchronized. You can also configure hybrid deployments for integration with on-premises Exchange and SharePoint, or with Microsoft Office 365 applications, including Exchange Online and SharePoint Online.

With a Skype for Business Server hybrid deployment, users in your organization who are homed on  the cloud can take advantage of Microsoft’s Cloud PBX technology to enable call control and Private Branch Exchange (PBX) capabilities on the Office 365 cloud with Skype for Business Online.
